Mercedes-Benz has begun production of the fifth-generation C-Class luxury sedan at its Chakan manufacturing facility in Pune, ahead of its launch next month in the country, as per PTI report.

The company stated in a statement that the C-Class model was originally introduced in India in 2001 and that there are currently more than 37,000 of them on the roads.

According to PTI, the luxury sedan, called ‘Baby S,’ will be available in three variants: C200, C200d, and top-end C300d, according to the firm. It will be launched in the domestic market on May 10.

The top luxury automobile brand in the country is looking for double-digit growth in car sales this year, riding high on a 43 percent volume growth in 2021 in the aftermath of a comeback in demand after a bad year in 2020.

It expects to release 10 new products in 2022, and as part of its push toward electrification, it also plans to locally assemble its all-electric sedan EQS.

In the fourth quarter of 2022, Mercedes-Benz India will launch the locally built electric EQS sedan. It already has an all-electric SUV in the local market, the EQC, which was launched in October 2020 as a fully imported unit, said PTI.

The carmaker recorded a 26 percent year-on-year increase in first-quarter sales of 4,022 units earlier this month, with the E-class Long Wheel Base and GLC SUV driving the boost.
