BBC bosses axe The One Show as part of major schedule shake-up

BBC has pulled The One Show from airing on Friday evening following a huge schedule shake-up.

The half an hour programme, which usually goes live at 7.30pm, will be making room for Wimbledon 2023 which starts at 7pm and will last for two hours.

Although The One Show often moves to its sister channel BBC Two when sporting events are on, it is unable to do so as it clashes with the Proms 2023.

Presenter Alex Jones shared the news at the end of Thursday night when she was wrapping up the episode alongside co-host Roman Kemp.

She said: “We won’t be here tomorrow but we are here on Monday, have a fabulous weekend.”

It’s not just The One Show that’s had to be changed to make way for Wimbledon this month as EastEnders, Casualty and Who Do You Think You Are? have all faced a shake-up.

While it’s not yet known which stars will be joining Alex and Jermaine Jenas next week, viewers saw a stellar line-up on Thursday evening as Barbie star Margot Robbie, America Ferrera and Billy Porter joined the show.

Recently, viewers saw the Welsh presenter reunite with her ex-boyfriend Steve Jones on the show as they spoke about the hit novel Call Time.

The duo were in a relationship for three years between 1999 and 2002 when they worked on the Channel 4 show Rise.

Despite them appearing to be all smiles during the interview, fans weren’t convinced as many thought there was some awkward tension.

One person quipped: “Steve can’t even look Alex in the eye! He’s glaring at Jermaine.

With another viewer tweeting: “OMG you could cut the tension with a knife between Alex and Steve.” (sic)

Defending the exes, one fan wrote: “They had a brutal breakup but fair play to them for being the bigger people and actually coming together for an interview like this.

The pair called it a day as Alex claimed in the past he lied in order to take her interview with Hollywood star Angeline Jolie.

Speaking about the split in an episode of The Dish podcast with Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, Alex said: “Normally they would call in the morning and ask to come and do an interview or a junket.

“I was staying in his flat at the time when I was working in London and he picked up the landline and said, ‘Al’s not here. She’s not feeling well, she’s had to go back to Cardiff.’ I was in Topshop, so he did the interview.”

The One Show continues Monday, July 17 on BBC One from 7pm.
