Bengali filmmaker Padma Shri Tarun Majumdar passes away at 91 | Bollywood Bubble

Veteran Indian filmmaker Tarun Majumdar who is known for his work in Bengali cinema, passed away this morning at the age of 91. The director was undergoing treatment in a hospital in Kolkata since June 14 and on Sunday, he was put on ventilator support when his health deteriorated. He suffered from a heart attack and took his last breath on 11.17 am this morning. He was suffering from chest infection, kidney and heart ailments prior to his death as well.

Tarun Majumdar was one of the most renowned names from the Bengali cinema and he had received recognition nationwide for the portrayal of middle-class life and the human condition. The filmmaker made his directorial debut in 1959 under the name Yatrik with the film Chaowa Pawa starring Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar as the leads.

Since then, Majumdar received widespread critical acclaim for his films like Palatak, Nimantran, Sansar Simante and Ganadevata. Not only that, he was the name behind many commercial Bengali blockbusters as well including Balika Badhu, Kuheli, Shriman Prithviraj, Fuleswari, Dadar Kriti, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa and Apan Amar Apan. He directed his last feature film in 2018 titled Bhalobashar Bari followed by a documentary feature film named Adhikar.

Majumdar received his first National Award win in 1962 for the Bengali film Kancher Swarga. Amongst the various laurels he received all through his career spanning almost six decades, the most prominent ones included being honoured with the fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri in 1990 and apart from that, he also received four National Awards.

The filmmaker’s frequent collaborators included his ex-wife Sandhya Roy, whom he directed in 20 films and actor Tapas Paul who featured in eight of his films. Including Tapas, he also introduced Moushumi Chatterjee, Mahua Roychoudhury and Ayan Banerjee to the big screen.
