Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson does man-on-street interview at 2023 NHL Draft

With the hockey world congregating in Nashville for the 2023 NHL Draft on Wednesday, you never know who you’ll run into on the streets.

That was the case when the crew from Penalty Box Radio approached “Kyle from Chicago” to test his hockey insight.

What interviewer Alex Daugherty didn’t know was that Kyle was actually Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson.

What followed was a hilarious exchange as Davidson played into it.

It started with Davidson being asked about where his hockey knowledge was on a scale of 1-to-10.

“Probably like a four,” Davidson replied. “Fan of the sport, I don’t know, some people say I don’t know that much.”

The Chicago GM, who went on to take Connor Bedard with the first overall pick in the draft, smirked as he finished the answer.

He then was asked to name as many NHL players as possible in 20 seconds, and Davidson named 17, including several Blackhawks players from Stanley Cup-winning teams.

The depth of the knowledge impressed Daugherty, who still was unaware of what was happening or that Davidson had been a part of the organization during its 2013 and 2015 Stanley Cup runs as the hockey administration coordinator.

The pièce de résistance to the comical clip came at the end when Davidson was asked if he thought the league rigged the draft to get the Blackhawks the first overall pick.

“No,” Davidson responded curtly. “I’m very confident (it wasn’t).”

Daugherty was at least able to laugh at himself for not identifying one of the most popular men in the city at the moment.

“This is, without question, the most hilariously spontaneous thing that’s ever happened in my hockey career,” he tweeted.

“Folks… I had no idea who this man was. And it ended up being the GM of the Blackhawks.”

There was no mistaking Davidson later in the day, however, as he led the Chicago contingency on stage to draft Bedard, the 17-year-old hockey whiz kid who will be the new face of the franchise.

The 17-year-old Bedard totaled 71 goals and 143 points for the Western Hockey League’s Regina Pats last season and helped lead Canada to gold at the 2023 World Junior Championship with 23 points in seven games.
