Kids TV show Bluey has been applauded by parents for tackling the issue around dads who find it hard to share their emotions.
It was the episode called ‘Stickbird’ that struck a chord with mums and dads after it featured Blue’s dad Bandit feeling downbeat and sad during a family day to the beach.
Viewers aren’t told why Bandit is feeling so sombre as he fails to get involved with his wife Chili teaching the kids how to throw a stick.
It’s only when another kid smashes up his kid Bingo’s sand sculpture that he can find a moment of clarity to speak up.
In the episode, Chilli urges her husband to let whatever is on his mind go and reminds him he is “missing” all the fun with the kids.
But it’s when his kid Bingo becomes upset that it jolts him to talk.
Bandit tells Bingo: “When you put something beautiful out into the world, it’s no longer yours really.”
Parents were left choked up by the scenes and said it was a good message to father’s not to bottle up their stress.
One dad commented on the episode: “I was laid off and have decided, in the name of stability, not to tell her. I have no clue if that’s what this episode is about but I’ve had more than my share of thousand-yard stares this week.”
Another father said it hit home that it’s important to teach children “that adults can be sad too”.
“What a lovely episode, the ending made me well up (been worried about a few things lately),” admitted another.
Later on the ABC’s Behind Bluey podcast, show boss Joe Brumm said the focus of the episode was how he coped with his struggles and not what the unknown worry was about.
