Tyson Fury is set to return to the ring next year against Dillian Whyte or Joe Joyce, according to co-promoter Bob Arum.

‘The Gypsy King’ retained his WBC heavyweight title in stunning fashion against Deontay Wilder earlier this month.

Oleksandr Usyk holds the IBF, WBO and WBA titles but a rematch with Anthony Joshua, likely to be held in the spring of 2022, rules out the possibility of an immediate unification bout against Fury.

Dillian Whyte was forced to withdraw from a fight against Otto Wallin on Saturday but he still holds the WBC interim heavyweight title and hopes to finally receive his first world title opportunity against Fury.

But Arum has also named Joyce as a possibility for April next year.

‘Who Fury fights next will be determined by Fury,’ Top Rank’s Arum told Sky Sports.

‘If the fight is in the UK, I would think Whyte would be a good possibility, as well as Joyce.’

Whyte has called for the WBC to enforce his position as the next challenger for Fury, hoping that fight can take place when he recovers from injury instead of a rescheduled meeting with Wallin.

Joyce meanwhile has proved his credentials with wins over Daniel Dubois and Carlos Takam in his last two outings and shares a promoter with Fury in Frank Warren.

Whichever fight is to be made, the UK is likely to play host.

‘It is very, very important that Tyson, having done his last five fights in the US, that he goes back and does a fight in the UK,’ Arum said.

‘He is a Brit, he has plenty of fans in the UK, and if he does a fight in the UK then comes back to the US, he will bring 10,000 Brits with him.’

On a possible date, Arum added: ‘Frank Warren is going to Manchester to meet Fury to work out a date. It could be March or April, but no later than April.

‘A date that would be appealing to us in the US, even if the fight took place in the UK, would be the middle of April because we have a college basketball tournament called March Madness which the country goes crazy for. It is tough to find a date for a big fight [during March Madness].

‘We will figure out who and when Tyson will fight next.’
