Bradley Beal was formally introduced as a new member of the Phoenix Suns on Thursday. During his introductory press conference, Beal talked about what excites him most about joining his new team.
His answer was a pretty interesting one, and a clue into what may have caused him to waive his no trade clause with the Washington Wizards.

Beal says that he looks forward to the “challenge” of playing in meaningful games on a nightly basis – something that he wasn’t able to do with the Wizards.
The Wizards made the playoffs only five times in Beal’s 11 seasons in Washington, with the majority of those appearances coming in his first few seasons. As the undisputed franchise player, Beal made one appearance in the playoffs with the Wizards in 2021.
Washington would lose to the Philadelphia 76ers in five games that year, and that is the last time Beal has been to the playoffs.
Barring catastrophic failure, Beal is very likely to make it back to the playoffs with the Suns this season. He’ll likely be the third option on a team with Kevin Durant and Devin Booker, but it’s a role he is somewhat used to playing.
When John Wall was healthy in Washington, Beal was seen as the team’s second option while Wall was the franchise player.
Beal will have the opportunity to play more meaningful basketball this season, but he’ll do it as more of a role player than a franchise star.
