Brave pup Monty overcomes ‘ruff’ patch to earn star role

A cute-as-a-button jack russel-cross who overcame horrific burns has been revealed as the face of RSPCA’s Guardian Angel fundraiser.

Monty’s life was in peril after suffering third-degree oil burns to 30 per cent of his body during an accident at home in September.

With his then owner unable to pay for the vet bills, he was surrendered to the animal group.

“I could tell Monty’s injuries were serious and infection had set it, so I raced him to a nearby vet, where I was told he needed surgery immediately,” RSPCA WA Inspector Florence Maude.

“It was a long and tricky procedure, but Monty was so brave.

“Once he was back at the Animal Care Centre and on the mend, he became like a different dog – so cuddly, happy and cheeky.”

Now 10 months old and fully recovered, Monty has been re-homed. It’s an outcome Ms Maude described as “one of the most heart-warming experience I’ve had”.

“He’s the perfect little ray of hope for other animals who are still waiting for their second chance,” she said.

Monty’s new owner says the cheeky pup has already “taken control of the house”.

“He loves to run around the backyard hiding his toys, my tools and our shoes as well,” smitten new owner Cristian Mostaccio said.

Monty’s heart-warming story has seen him cast as the furry face of an initiative aimed at finding sponsors for homeless animals over Christmas.

About 31,000 animals are expected to pass through the RSPCA’s shelters this festive season.

“Sadly, hundreds of animals are expected through our doors over the coming months,” RSPCA fundraising team leader Marnie Thomson said.

“By becoming a Guardian Angel, people can pledge much-needed support for one of these animals in need over Christmas, providing everything they need to recover and prepare for their new life.”
