‘Brilliant’ cupboard staple ‘whitens’ clothes, claims Mrs Hinch fans

There’s nothing worse than opening the washing machine only to find your once-white clothes now grey. White towels, undergarments, t-shirts, jeans and sweatshirts can all turn a greyish colour if they’re washed incorrectly.

To keep clothes looking pristine, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared how they keep their clothes white.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.7 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

On one such group, Facebook user Sue Tucker posted: “I’m about to go on holiday so I thought I’d use a 60C wash on my whites on a whites setting.

“Quite a few things were looking a big grey. I used washing soda, Oxy powder for whites and a Persil washing pod.

“Even on a 60C wash, nothing came out any whiter. I don’t know what to try next. Any ideas please? My bras that were bought as white are really grey now. Help!”

The post was inundated with responses but the most suggested response was to use Napisan.

Fiona Clarke said: “Napisan or Dr Beckmann Glowhite and don’t use pods with white items, use white powder not coloured pods.”

Sharon Stoddart commented: “Soak and wash whites in Napisan, it’s brilliant.” Becky Chisman suggested: “Soak in Napisan.”

Vicky Robinson wrote: “Soak for a few days in Napisan then do normal a wash. A hot wash, I don’t believe in.”

Susan Gorman posted: “I soaked my bra in a lingerie whitener (from supermarket) then washed normally with other whites on 40C with added Napisan. Now in my drawer rather than the bin!”

Sarah Lovatt said: “I use Napisan and Daz liquid. Always comes out bright.

“But for a natural whitener, if you can, wash the clothes and leave the washing out overnight.

“When you have a frost (bit difficult at the moment), the ice brings out the true colour.”

Patricia Gray agreed: “Definitely soak in Napisan, then wash as normal.”

Napisan can be bought online or from most local supermarkets. Napisan Powder costs £4.20 from Sainsbury’s, £3.70 from Wilko and £4.50 from Ocado.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans for whitening laundry items included using Dr Beckmann Glowhite, Milton sterilising tablets, Vanish Gold and bleach tablets.

Frances Wiseman said: “What about Dr Beckmann Glowhite Ultra? Amazon sell it.”

Michelle Cairns suggested: “Soak overnight in Dr Beckmann Glowhite sachets.” Linda Alan Bagley posted: “Milton sterilising tablets for a couple of hours.”

Felicity Thomson wrote: “I use Vanish Gold.” Julie Ann Parsons said: “Bleach tablets from Tesco.”
