Brit accused of stabbing his father to death in Tenerife ‘was suffering from schizophrenia’

This is a British holiday maker accused of stabbing his own father to death in a frenzy in Tenerife after a row over tidying up.  

Disturbed Paul Corcoran is accused of killing his father, former Merchant Navy hero Simon Corcocan, 58, who was knifed dozens of times, after going to stay with him on the holiday island.

The Brit, 38, has been held at a special jail on the Spanish Canary island since his arrest over the horrific crime in July 2020. He is still awaiting his criminal case being resolved.

Corcoran had been visiting his ex-pat father, 58, during the first international Covid lockdown when the fatal attack happened – soon after they argued about him not tidying up.

The father-of-four was brutally stabbed at his home in Los Abrigos, a small port on Tenerife’s southern coast region of Granadilla de Abona.

A post-mortem found the victim was knifed around 35 times with many of the wounds inflicted from behind.

Until now the suspect, understood to be a former soldier, has only been named officially by his initials P.C.S. But MailOnline has learned his full identity – and the family tragedy behind the case.

Corcoran Jnr had been living with his mother, also an ex-pat Brit and divorced from her husband, at her home in southern Spain.

A family source has told MailOnline exclusively that Corcoran suffered from ‘acute schizophrenia.’

He has previously been pictured arriving for his first court appearance nearly three years ago, led in wearing bandages on his left hand.

A spokesperson for the Civil Guard, investigating the death two summers ago, said: ‘I can confirm a British man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his father, who is also British.’

The alarm is said to have been raised after the suspect went to have coffee at his girlfriend’s flat with blood on his hands.

His father’s body was found at a nearby property.

The victim worked as a tree surgeon and garden specialist and kept in regular contact with his daughter living in the Midlands and his son.

His third son had sadly passed away nearly seven years ago.

Police said they were unable to comment on local reports that the suspect had suffered from mental health issues.

But a family source said: ‘Paul suffers from acute schizophrenia and had been visiting his dad during the first Covid lockdown.

‘He is not a monster. People think he is for what he allegedly did but he is sick and the system failed him.

‘He hadn’t been given his medication. He needs help, he is not bad.

‘He was having a psychotic episode and didn’t know what he was doing.

‘The tragic sequence of events has devastated and torn the family apart.’

Family members in Britain first heard of the horror by reading about it on news websites.

A source said: ‘Simon and his daughter Lauren were very close and she was devastated when she first found out he had died. She assumed it was a heart attack or natural causes.

‘Paul’s case kept getting pushed back and meanwhile he’s been left deteriorating in custody.

‘The family has spent a fortune in legal fees for Spanish lawyers and just wants the case to be dealt with as soon as. It has been dragging on.’
