Jamie Carragher cannot get his head round the signing of Cody Gakpo at Liverpool, saying he is not a typical Jurgen Klopp player and will be on the bench when all the other forwards are fit.

The 23-year-old arrived at Anfield in January for a fee which could rise to £45m with add-ons, but he has made a slow start to life in English football.

The Netherlands international is yet to score in his first six appearances for the Reds and has not been setting the world on fire with his level of performance either.

It is a tricky time to join the Liverpool squad, with Klopp’s side a long way from their best, but Carragher is confused as to why Gakpo is the player they wanted in January.

The Reds legend does not believe the Dutch forward suits Klopp’s style of play and the money could have been better spent on other areas of the team as Gakpo will be out of the side when Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are fit again.

‘In attack, Diaz started his Liverpool career brilliantly but Nunez is a work in progress, and I am baffled watching Gakpo’s early performances,’ Carragher wrote in The Telegraph.

‘Gakpo is not a typical Klopp signing, lacking lightning pace and the capacity to lead a high press.

‘Why commit up to £45 million on someone who will be on the bench when Diaz and Diogo Jota are fit? Especially when another area of the team needed strengthening?’

Gakpo will have the chance to prove his doubters wrong on Monday night in the Merseyside derby at Anfield, but Carragher is not the only one to notice his early issues at Liverpool.

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman said it has been a difficult start for him, former PSV manager Aad de Mos has suggested that the move may have been a mistake, while Michael Owen feels sorry for Gakpo trying to excel in a struggling side.
