Casualty has won Best Soap and Continuing Drama at the Broadcast Awards.

Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Holby City were the other nominees within the category.

All soaps and continuing dramas have aired superb storylines and episodes within the past year.

For Coronation Street, their most memorable storyline from 2021 saw Nina (Mollie Gallagher) and Seb (Harry Visinoni) get attacked by Corey’s (Maximus Evans) gang simply because of Nina’s Victorian sub-culture.

In Emmerdale, the village hosted it’s first ever Pride event, with Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK star The Vivienne paying a visit as a special guest.

Over in EastEnders, 2021 saw Ben (Max Bowden) and Callum (Tony Clay) finally get married and Max (Jake Wood) and Ian’s (Adam Woodyatt) very memorable exits.

For Holby City, following news of the cancellation, the drama has continued to deliver outstanding episodes with a strong focus on how the Coronavirus pandemic has impacted the staff working within the hospital.

And for Hollyoaks, as part of Channel 4’s Black to Front project, the soap aired an episode focusing around the Deveraux family that featured characters of past, present and the future, all played by Black and of Black heritage talent.

After being forced off air due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Casualty returned to screens in January with a special episode focused on how the Emergency Department dealt with the first wave.

As Connie (Amanda Mealing) struggled with the pressure, multiple members of her team became infected, including beloved receptionist Noel Garcia (Tony Marshall).

Sadly, Noel died from the virus.

As 2021 continued, Casualty regularly highlighted how the pandemic impacted the team, with a spotlight being shone on how Jade (Gabriella Leon) coped with working as a deaf nurse and wearing full PPE.

The drama also saw paramedic Iain (Michael Stevenson) save his friend Jacob (Charles Venn) from girlfriend Tina (Adele James), who was physically and mentally abusing him.
