Sheldon Young, best known behind the decks as Channel Tres, is renowned for his blend of Detroit techno with the silky sounds of Chicago house and West Coast rap, creating his distinct style of Compton house. On November 9, the artist released “6am.”

“I wanted to push the envelope on funk music,” Young says. “It’s inspired by my travels and the things I’ve been going through. It’s a motivational song as far as grinding and working hard—for people [who] are getting off their shifts at six in the morning, starting their shifts at six in the morning or maybe I’m in the studio until six in the morning or traveling early. It’s one of those songs to motivate through life but in the context of partying.”

The track boasts his smooth vocals, woozy and groovy sounds, a big Motown melody and a hint of French touch. Next, his Real Cultural Sh*t album will be Young’s proper introduction to Compton house. Young says the album is inspired by creating culture, whether in the studio with people or on your own with others. “I remember as a kid growing up in Compton, my friends and I created our own culture,” he says. “We had our own slang, we had our own thing. When I was making this project, one thing I kept saying in the studio, was, ‘Man, this is real culture. Man, this is what I’m on right now.’ It’s about cementing moments in my life and making anything you do with a group of people and [having] synergy…that’s culture for the moment.”

Young has toured the world with artists such as Robyn, Vince Staples, Disclosure and Toro y Moi. In addition, he has soundtracked Apple commercials, HBO series, Paris runway shows and major motion pictures. According to the artist, he saw himself becoming a producer when he was just 12-years-old. He initially started making music with a game on PlayStation called Music Generator. He made his first beat at that time, which he says “came naturally” to him. “I just love like knobs and the things in the studio really intrigued my mind,” he says. “It was something that intrigued me as a kid and it still intrigues me today.”

The Compton house maven had his career take off in 2018. “I think the music is starting to spread around the world and then, as I’m doing features and still producing records for other people, people start to see me in different areas,” Young says. “I’m dialing in my live show more with costumes and different production. I’m growing to a point where I can execute my ideas better. I feel like people are starting to see that this is something they could be invested in for the long haul. I’m going to be around for a while. I’m not just going to be around for a moment.”
