Cheapest summer holiday destination is ‘charming’

0

Everything seems expensive right now, and travel might seem impossible for those on a strict budget. Luckily, the travel experts at Kayak have hand-picked 20 destinations that are suitable for a low-cost summer holiday.

1. Galicia, Spain

Spain is a much-loved holiday hotspot for Brits, but towards the north-western coast is the region of Galicia.

The weather is said to be similar to Italian springtime, and coffee and beer prices are representative of those in the 1990s.

The area itself is known for seafood, which is caught and delivered straight from net to table.

In terms of where is best to stay, the experts recommended Vigo, “a romantic old provincial capital on a hillside that’ll remind you of San Francisco”. It also has a harbour district which is “especially charming” and is well-stocked with cafes and bars.

There are also plenty of free activities, from hiking along the Camino de Santiago to relaxing on As Catedrais beach or enjoying the culture at Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela and Muralla Romana de Lugo.

The best time to visit Galicia is April to October when there are plenty of clear, sunny days, but occasionally there is some rainfall.

Average daily spend: Coffee costs £1.19 on average, and a three-course meal for two is £30.

2. Turkey

Some areas of Turkey have become heavily amassed with tourists, but Turunç is the “perfect place to find a quiet place on the beach”, and those wanting a bit more action, can “hop aboard a taxi-boat and in just 30 minutes, you’ll be at a club”.

Anyone looking for culture could take a three-hour trip to Ephesus to see the ruins which are said to be among the top preserved ancient sites in the world. Kayak said an entrance ticket costs £8.50 “but is worth every penny”.

The best time to visit is May to October.

Average daily spend: A local three-course meal costing £7.50.

3. Golden Sands, Bulgaria

Anyone after a cheap beach holiday should consider the Golden Sands in Bulgaria.

In the town, there are terracotta-tiley rooftops and a beautiful marina filled with bobbing yachts, with plenty of beachside clubs to visit.

A beer will set tourists back £1, a coffee 60p or a large bottle of water for 40p. There are also plenty of drinks deals with a flat rate of £6.50 for two hours of drinking at some bars.

For those wanting to enjoy a larger party scene, Sunny Beach is just down the road.

The best time to visit is in the summer.

Average daily spend: £60 per person. A three-course meal for two on average costs less than £20. A return flight is approximately £117 per person.

5. Saranda, Albania

Along the Albanian Riviera is Saranda, and Kayak said it’s “emerging as a vibrant new tourist destination for those on a shoestring budget”.

Saranda was formerly a quiet fishing village, but due to its “stunning climate” – with no less than 300 sunny days a year – it’s now growing in popularity.

Since it’s only a stone’s throw away from Corfu, there are Greek influences everywhere – and a day trip there is on the cards if you want.

South of the town is Ksamil Beach, which is nicknamed Ionian Pearl since it’s home to crystal clear waters. Mirror Beach is said to be lovely too for a spot of sunbathing.

Two hours north and tourists can explore Llogara National Park, which Julius Ceasar famously passed through on his way to Pompey in 48 BC.

The best time to visit is April to October.

The average daily spend: £50 and a good meal will cost around £5.
