Chrissy Teigen explains how 4th baby came 5 months after she gave birth to baby no. 3

When it comes to choices about family planning, stars really are not “just like us!” Consider Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s big news Wednesday.

The Hollywood super couple revealed Wednesday that they had just welcomed the birth of a son, Wren Alexander Stephens, on June 19.  Of course this is happy news, but you wouldn’t be alone in thinking: Didn’t she just give birth?

Yes, Teigen gave birth on Jan. 13 — five months ago — to the couple’s third child, a daughter named Esti.

In Wednesday’s Instagram post, the model and cookbook author explained that Wren wasn’t the result of a remarkably short gestation period, but that he arrived via a surrogate. Teigen further explained that it was by design that she and Legend ended up welcoming two newborns in the brief span of five months.

In multi-part Instagram post, Teigen said that she always had wanted to have a total of four children. She and Legend first became parents to Luna, 7, and Miles, 4. They conceived these children with the help of in vitro fertilization, she said.

Teigen became pregnant again in 2020, but she sadly shared the news in September of that year that she had lost the pregnancy at 20 weeks. She said, “We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

Following the loss of their baby, whom they named Jack, Teigen and Legend explored the possibility of using surrogates to have more children, she revealed.

Of course, it helps to have money and other resources to undergo in vitro fertilization and to hire surrogates. Teigen said they considered hiring two surrogates at the same time. The surrogates would carry two babies in tandem; one would carry the boy, the other the girl. “Twins, kinda?!” Teigen said.

But early in their “surrogacy journey,” Teigen realized in therapy that she wanted to try carrying a pregnancy one last time. “If it doesn’t work, we will be OK,” Teigen said she told her husband. “We’ve already seen the worst. I promised I would be OK no matter what happened.”

Teigen said she and Legend once again began the IVF process to produce viable embryos. They transferred one of the embryos into Teigen, and it grew into their daughter Esti. Meanwhile, they met “the most incredible, loving, compassionate surrogate we could imagine,” Teigen said.

Unfortunately, the first embryo they tried in Alexandra, their surrogate, didn’t survive. Teigen said Alexandra was willing to try again, and she “fought hard” to get ready for the second transfer, including undergoing surgery to remove scar tissue, she said.

Meanwhile, Teigen’s pregnancy with Esti was progressing happily past the first trimester. That’s when she and Legend learned that the second transfer worked and Alexandra was pregnant. So, that’s why Teigen’s timing for a “tandem” pregnancy with her surrogate didn’t go as planned.

But Teigen said they are thrilled, especially because she has fulfilled her dream of becoming a mom to four children. Both their “hearts” and their “home” are “officially full,” Teigen said.

Certainly, speaking of having a “full” house, Teigen and Legend certainly will be busy, taking care of two babies under the age of six months — plus their other two young children. But in another way that stars are not “just like us,” Teigen and Legend probably are getting lots of help from nannies to manage all those kids.
