Cruise guest complains ship’s ‘buffet is carnage’

Cruise holidays are extremely popular in the UK but not everyone can see the appeal. A Reddit user “diamondlights_’ took to the platform to share their complaints.

They said: “First cruise and I just don’t get it. I’m sorry. I’m trying hard to enjoy but I just don’t get it.

“Family trip but everything is super packed. Buffet is carnage. You get to the pool and then 10 minutes later, it’s sardines in a tin. I can’t see the appeal at all. What am I missing?”

Family cruises can be extremely busy during the school holidays and mega-ships can carry thousands of passengers at once.

The buffet is usually one of the ship’s most popular restaurants and guests might experience queues at popular times.

Another Reddit user ‘Idiot_Esq’ said: “Sounds like the first thing that you need to stay aware of when thinking about cruising again is timing.

“More specifically not during school breaks. And you should think about what kind of cruise you want to enjoy.”

While some cruise brands such as Royal Caribbean and Disney cater to families, others are specifically designed for adults.

Virgin Voyages only allows over 18s on their ships while Fred.Olsen also has a lot of cruises designed to be adult-only.

‘Beachy5313’ said: “It’s spring break where I live and it seems like everyone is off on vacation.

“I don’t like people so I cruise during the off season and enjoy it being quiet. Even though the boat size stays the same, during school breaks people are more likely to be tripling up in a room and looking for a deal.”

School holidays are always one of the busiest times to go away so guests who don’t like crowds might like to avoid travelling then.

Another guest ‘scotsman3288’ said: “Cruises appeal to us mostly because we enjoy seeing multiple cities in a small amount of time.

“We are too busy to take three weeks off at a time. I can’t lie and do nothing on a beach for a week either.

“I like getting off the boat and walking around, doing a tour and the scenery is usually top notch. These types of things overrule any of the downsides to cruising.”

Cruise holidays allow tourists to see a huge range of different destinations in a short amount of time.

Guests who are worried about crowds might be best off booking a cruise that stops in a new place almost every day.

This means passengers can spend a lot of time off the ship and can escape the crowds onboard.

If the buffet is a stressful experience, guests could try booking one of the specialty restaurants.

Another way to avoid the crowds is to eat a late or early dinner when the restaurant is quieter.

The pool and spa areas are also quieter during the early morning or passengers could stay onboard during a port day for a peaceful experience.
