  • The former Scotland boss was the last man to lead the country to a World Cup
  • West Ham manager David Moyes and Alex McLeish were both in attendance

Icons of Scottish football turned out enmasse at the funeral of former Scotland team manager Craig Brown on Tuesday.

Brown sadly died at the age of 82 while surrounded by close family members in June following a short illness in University Hospital, Ayr.

He established a legendary status within football north of the border after taking Scotland to the 1998 World Cup in France and managing Aberdeen after stints in England at Fulham and Preston North End.

West Ham boss David Moyes paid his respects to Brown as he arrived wearing a black suit and tie alongside his father at a service taking place at Ayr Racecourse.

Moyes had been in charge of Preston during his first permanent managerial position up until 2002 before leaving for Everton, with Brown filling in as his successor.

Fellow former Scotland manager Alex McLeish was also in attendance and joined the event to honour the life of one of Scottish football’s greats.

Brown had previously defended McLeish after he was reappointed national team boss 11 years after leaving his role in 2007 with critics at the time labelling him as ‘disloyal’.

McLeish had also previously starred in the Scotland set-up under Brown but retired from national duties before their final World Cup bow.

Aberdeen legend Willie Miller was also in attendance on Tuesday as he joined former team-mates and friends in the coastal town.

Miller featured in two World Cup campaigns for Scotland – 1982 and 1986 – but finished his playing career prior to Brown’s takeover.

Other notable attendees included former Scottish star Archie Knox who also worked alongside Sir Alex Ferguson during the Manchester United icon’s time in charge at Aberdeen.

Current Aberdeen manager Barry Robson was also present at Brown’s funeral after taking time out of his side’s pre-season preparations to attend.
