Daxxify is the longer-lasting Botox alternative

0

The forehead-smoothing effects of Botox are undeniable. But now Daxxify, a rival aesthetic injectable that was approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on September 8, is set to knock it off its throne. What makes Daxxify such a big deal is the promise of results that last twice as long as Botox when temporarily treating frown lines. In fact, it claims to have longer-lasting results than anything similar on the market. Not to mention, it’s the first and only peptide-formulated neuromodulator (a formal name for wrinkle-relaxing injections).

While Daxxify isn’t available in-clinic at dermatologists or cosmetic doctors just yet, it might just be the next big thing in cosmetic treatments. For this reason, Dr Wassim Taktouk of the Taktouk Clinic in London, is keen to introduce it on his treatment menu. “On average our patients attend three to four times per year for their Botox treatment,” he says. “As Daxxify has longer-lasting results, they would need as few as two appointments a year.  This works better financially for the patient and also frees up more appointments for us and shortens our waiting list. So everyone is a winner.”

Here’s what we know so far…

What is Daxxify?

According to Revance Therapeutics, the company behind the drug, Daxxify (DaxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm) is an aesthetic injection for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines (also known as glabellar lines) in adults. It’s the first and only neuromodulator on the market powered by peptide technology, which delivers the botulinum toxin to the nerve cells. “Daxxify then works to block the nerve signal that tells the muscle to contract,” says Dr Taktouk. “This results in the weakening of the muscle responsible for wrinkles, therefore smoothing them out and preventing new wrinkles from forming.”

It is also free of human serum albumin (a protein found in human blood) and any animal-based components.

How is Daxxify different to Botox?

A major complaint for injectable enthusiasts is that the results of neuromodulators such as Botox typically only last a few months, which doesn’t exactly make them purse-friendly. “Daxxify will be a game changer as current neuromodulators on the market are effective for around three months,” says Dr Taktouk. While Daxxify delivers similar results to Botox when injected between the eyebrows, the main difference is that the results can last between six to nine months. So now you have choices.

What parts of the face can Daxxify treat?

Right now, Daxxify is only FDA approved to treat the glabella lines on the forehead (the short vertical lines found between the eyebrows, extending up the central forehead).

Are there any side effects?

According to Dr Taktouk, Daxxify is generally safe and well tolerated. “The trials showed no difference in significant side effects from other toxins available on the market currently,” he says. In other words, adverse effects include bruising, headaches and eyelid drooping. As with any aesthetic treatment, seek out a licensed professional to administer the injection to minimise the risk of an adverse reaction.

How much does Daxxify cost?

As yet there is no information on price and it is likely that the end cost will be determined by individual practitioners. However, it’s widely expected that Daxxify will be more expensive than Botox given the longer-lasting results.
