Day by bluebird day, Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev prepared for his playoff turn. Now it’s here.

Spring weather in the Front Range changes quickly, but Alexandar Georgiev on Monday had it pegged.

He didn’t plan to let a bluebird April afternoon get away from him, despite a long morning of meetings for the Avalanche, a noon practice skate on the Ball Arena ice and, oh by the way, the start of the biggest stretch of his career coming up on Tuesday.

But if it could snow or jump to 80 degrees or rain or do all of the above between the time he shed his pads post-practice Monday and when he settles into the crease as Colorado’s main man the next day, then why worry about what’s ahead?

“It’s a nice day today, so I’m going to enjoy that,” Georgiev told the reporters gathered around his locker Monday looking for insight as to how he’s preparing for postseason hockey. “And when it’s game time, it’s game as usual.”

“Be where your skates are,” is advice that could apply to any number of people in any number of situations, but it’s something Georgiev has worked on diligently as his first regular season as a full-time starter progressed. By its conclusion last week, he finished tied for third among NHL goaltenders with 62 games played and tied for the league lead with 40 wins.

Colorado coach Jared Bednar was mid-answer to a question about his own excitement level and his team’s in general on Monday when he said  “The 82 games we just played, for me, are just preparation to get to this point.” But the sentiment holds true for nobody more than his goalie.

“He’s found a way and kind of worked his way into that (full-time) role,” Bednar said of Georgiev, who before this season had never appeared in more than 34 games in a season. “We’ve talked about it before, when (Pavel Francouz) got hurt the first time, how he handled playing every night and how he handled the pressure and adjustments he made to try to sort of step away from games on the off days and not have to worry about it or mentally grind over the next game when it was still 24 or 48 hours away.

“That’s served him well over the course of the season and he’s got better and better as the season’s gone on and he’ll have to do the same again in the playoffs.”

Georgiev maintains that Tuesday night will just be game No. 83 on the calendar, though he allows he doesn’t know entirely what it will feel like when the puck drops.

“I don’t think think about it every single second of the day,” he said. “I’m sure there will be a little more adrenaline than usual the first game, but that’s fine, too. I think it helps a bit as well, too.”

The Avalanche are counting on it. Georgiev’s sum total of postseason experience came over two games last May – 58 minutes and 57 seconds of relief duty for the New York Rangers after Pittsburgh peppered starter Igor Shesterkin in back-to-back outings.

The Rangers made the Eastern Conference Finals in that run before bowing out to Tampa Bay, which then became the final victim in Colorado’s run to its first Stanley Cup title in 21 years.

That experience grinding through the playoffs last year is considered one of the Avs’ biggest strengths as their title defense begins against Seattle.

“There’s a lot of champions in there,” injured captain Gabriel Landeskog said of his team’s dressing room last week. “Majority of the guys were there, and they know what to expect. I think that’s the advantage you have after having gone through it, is you know what to expect every step of the way.”

Georgiev doesn’t, but he figured out the regular season and carries himself with a confidence that he’ll do the same in the playoffs. His teammates are confident, too.

“I think he’s just a professional,” forward Evan Rodrigues said. “He goes about his business the right way and he always seems prepared. His preparation is some of the best I’ve seen. I just think he’ll be ready to go.”

Before the game on Tuesday, Georgiev will get in some reaction and tracking work with tennis balls before he finds a moment for solitude.

“I try to find a peaceful moment to just kind of sit in the quiet and relax the mind a bit,” he said of his routine.
