DC total was more important than IPL century for Warner

Among the many glorious knocks David Warner has played, his unbeaten 92 for Delhi Capitals against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Brabourne Stadium on Thursday night, will rank one of his sweetest.

Indeed, it was sweet revenge for the New South Welshman as he blasted 12 fours and three sixes against his former Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, who removed him from the captaincy and then dropped him in the last edition of the league. Taking just 58 balls for his unconquered 92 underlined Warner’s intent while up against the very team he helped become champions in 2016.

Powell scores big

Warner also had another chance to score his maiden IPL century as he was on 92 before the 20th over. But instead, he urged Rovman Powell to go for big shots for DC to go beyond 200. Warner didn’t get strike in the final over bowled by young pacer Umran Malik, who Powell hit for a six and three fours to total 207-3.

“At the start of the last over, I asked him [Warner] if he wanted a single to try and hit a hundred, but he said, ‘listen, that’s not how cricket is played,’ and that I should try to smack it as hard as I can and I did that,” Powell, who scored a 35-ball 67 not out, told reporters.

No motivation required

Meanwhile, Warner chose not to speak directly about the revenge factor after DC’s 21-run win. “I didn’t need extra motivation. We’ve all seen what’s happened before and it was just [about] a win on the board and get back in this contest,” he said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Warner, 35, had managed just 195 in eight games for SRH in 2021. However, after the same number of games for DC this season, he is among the top four run-getters with 356 runs, a tally that includes four half-centuries.

One of the best innings I have seen: Pant

David Warner’s unbeaten 92 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad was one of the best innings Rishabh Pant witnessed from the sidelines, the Delhi Capitals skipper himself said on Thursday. Warner’s 58-ball magnificent effort helped Delhi beat SRH by 21 runs. “The way he batted, the way he paced the innings, it’s one of the best innings I have seen [in the Delhi camp],” said Pant at the post-match presentation.
