Dele Alli faces ‘kick up the backside’ from Dyche after making Everton return

Dele Alli is back at Everton for pre-season after an underwhelming loan spell at Besiktas in Turkey, but has been warned that he could be facing a “kick up the backside” from Toffees boss Sean Dyche. The 37-cap England man’s career has tumbled since being a star at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino and he is now facing an uncertain future at Goodison Park.

Current Everton boss Dyche was not at the club when Alli departed on loan last summer and now has the chance for the first time to work with him on the training pitch. The 27-year-old has previously been criticised for his lack of effort behind the scenes by Jose Mourinho at Spurs, but Alli will be looking to dispel that theory.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Dyche’s perceived no-nonsense approach could hugely benefit Alli. When asked if Dyche would be a positive figure for Alli, Murphy told talkSPORT: “I’d say yes. He won’t take any nonsense, but he’ll also help him a little bit. I’m not suggesting you have to do one or the other all the time… I think Sean Dyche’s got it in him to occasionally put his arm around him and help him along.

“My gut feeling is where Dele Alli’s come from, what I’ve heard about the upbringing he’s had and the type of lad he is, I do think he needs a bit of love. But I think more importantly he needs a ruthless manager who’s going to really push him and kick him up the backside.

“Moving all that aside, do I think he will reach the heights of before? I don’t think so. I think it’s too far back to come. I still think he can have a decent career in the game. He’s got to be looking for a Premier League club.”

Alli was one of the first Everton players to report to pre-season, having returned early from his loan at Besiktas owing to injury – though Turkish reports at the time claimed that boss Senol Gunes banished him from the club, but the former England international’s attitude will undoubtedly have impressed Dyche.

With just one year left on his contract at Goodison, Alli has a chance to impress Dyche who is already forming a positive opinion of the midfielder. “I just got a sense that he wants to be back playing football and playing well,” Dyche said regarding Alli earlier this month.

“I’ve heard all the noise, I’ve heard all the opinions and I’m pretty sure that you’re aware that I like to make my own. But he needs to get fit. I’ve met him but I haven’t seen him train, I haven’t seen him play for Everton, I haven’t seen him train with us every day.

“It’s important that he gets himself properly fit and – if he needs an operation or doesn’t – then makes sure his fitness is good and makes sure he’s well and ready to go.”
