eBay executives get years in prison for harassing, stalking Natick couple

Live spiders, cockroaches, a bloody pig Halloween mask and a book about surviving the loss of a spouse all arrived at a Natick couple’s doorstep in a bizarre harassment campaign directed by former eBay executives who will now spend years in the slammer.

Former Senior Director of Safety and Security at eBay, James Baugh, was sentenced in federal court in Boston to four years and nine months in prison for his role in a secret campaign to make the lives of a Natick couple who ran a newsletter about ecommerce “a living hell.”

Those are the words of one of their targets, David Steiner, who along with his wife, Ina Steiner, run EcommerceBytes, a blog and newsletter on all aspects of ecommerce.

It was their coverage of eBay that set a plan in motion to bombard the couple with unwanted packages and manipulative social tactics.

“This was a bizarre, premeditated assault on our lives … with buy-in at the highest levels of eBay,” David Steiner told Judge Patti Saris Thursday, who added that it seemed like a plan “devised by the most disturbed of sociopaths.”

David Harville, the former eBay director of global resiliency, was also sentenced Thursday to nearly two years in prison.

Authorities portrayed Baugh as the mastermind of the scheme and said he directed eBay employees to use prepaid debit cards, disguises and overseas email accounts to hide the company’s involvement.

“The defendants have stolen over three years of our lives and the repercussions of their actions will reverberate far beyond the personal toll it’s taken on us,” David Steiner wrote in a victim impact statement.
