‘Effective’ methods to prevent yellowing bed sheets in the heat

Brian Dillion, an interior expert from Crafted Beds, has shared his top five tips to follow if you want to prevent “yellow” sweat stains on your bedding this weekend.

1. Pre-treat stains

The expert said: “Before tossing your bed sheets into the washing machine, it’s important to pre-treat any stains to get the best results.

“Apply a gentle stain remover directly to the affected area and let it sit for a few minutes. Gently rub the fabric together to help the stain remover penetrate the fibres.

“This will help ensure that stubborn sweat stains don’t set in and become more difficult to remove.”

2. Wash with oxygenated bleach

When washing bedding, opt for an oxygenated bleach rather than chlorine bleach, which can be picked up in supermarkets.

It is gentler on fabrics than chlorine bleach, yet still “effective” at removing stains and “keeping whites bright”.

The expert added: “Follow the instructions on the bleach packaging and add it to the washing machine along with your detergent. This will help maintain the whiteness of your sheets without causing any damage.”

3. Use hot water

To ensure a thorough clean and to kill any bacteria and odours, make sure to wash bedding in hot water.

Hot water helps to break down oils and sweat more effectively, leaving them fresh and hygienic, so make sure to opt for around 60C

This also is the same when washing towels, although it is best to separate them to keep them hygienic.

The expert recommended checking the care instructions to make sure they can withstand hot water.

4. Dry sheets outside

Brian continued: “After washing, take advantage of the summer sun by air-drying your bed sheets outside.

“Sunlight acts as a natural bleaching agent and can help remove any remaining stains or discolouration.

“Hang your sheets in direct sunlight, making sure to flip them occasionally for even drying. Not only will this keep your sheets bright, but it will also infuse them with a refreshing outdoor scent.”

5. Invest in a mattress protector

The interior expert said that prevention is “key” when it comes to maintaining the whiteness of a mattress, which can also turn yellow during the summer months.

The best thing to do in this scenario would be to invest in a mattress protector which is specifically designed to repel liquids and stains.

Brian added: “These protectors create a barrier between your body and the mattress, preventing sweat and other fluids from seeping into the fabric.

“Not only will this extend the life of your mattress, but it will also help keep it looking pristine.”
