Emmerdale paid a touching tribute to Meg Johnson at the end of Monday’s ITV episode.

Meg portrayed the iconic Pearl Ladderbanks from 2003 to 2020, but her family confirmed she had died on Sunday.

A title card appeared at the end of the programme which simply read: “Meg Johnson, 30 September 1936 – 1 July 2023.”

Meg’s last scene in the ITV soap, aired on March 13, 2020, and saw Pearl leaving the village to move into a static home away from the Dales.

Pearl expressed her keenness to find some independence and move away from the Yorkshire village.

On Sunday, ITV paid a tribute to Meg in a joint statement with her family.

It confirmed the actress, who had also appeared in Coronation Street, had died after a battle with dementia.

It read: “It is with great sadness that we announce that actress Meg Johnson passed away peacefully yesterday evening surrounded by her family.

“Meg was a kind and wonderful lady, full of warmth and always with a twinkle in her eye. Meg had an outstanding career that ended with her playing Pearl Ladderbanks in Emmerdale from 2003.

“Meg had dementia for the last few years, but battled on personally and professionally regardless. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”

Fans also took to twitter following the episode to praise Emmerdale for their touching tribute.

@geordiegalg said: “Aw the tribute to Meg Johnson at the end! #Emmerdale.”

@Tubzy2001 penned: “RIP Meg #Emmerdale.”

While @TwellyWatcher added: “Emmerdale paid such a lovely tribute.”

“Pearl #RipMeg #Emmerdale,” @VampLover27 simply wrote with a heart emoji.

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
