Nayara Bocas del Toro, an adults-only private island luxury retreat located off the Caribbean coast of Panama, has recently unveiled two towering fifty-foot treehouses designed by IBUKU’s Elora Hardy. This exciting development marks the Bali-based design studio’s first-ever project in Central America.

Made from locally sourced bamboo and partially petrified hardwoods that were reclaimed from the floor of the Panama Canal, the solar-powered treehouses are an architectural marvel. The structures are the first of five treehouses designed by Elora Hardy. They are located at the end of a lovely series of meandering paths that are covered in lush greenery and accessible via curving stairs.

The one-bedroom accommodations are elegant and whimsical, with 21-foot ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer breathtaking views of the mangrove forest canopy. The open-air living room is perfect for relaxing and taking in the stunning surroundings, while the outdoor jungle showers and deep soaking tubs provide an opportunity to bathe en plein air. Additionally, a clever pulley system permits unobtrusive room service.

“At Bocas Nayara’s treehouse, we wind up among the tall stilts to a glass Moon Doorthat turns like a dancer on its center pivot. Bamboo and reclaimed hardwood underfoot give texture to our journey. Around us, screens curve playfully and poles soar overhead. Overlooking the mangroves, the view wraps around usand we feel like we are part of it. With a balance of elegance and texture, weare at once open to nature and sheltered within our own space. Here is the place where we can incubate unforgettable experiences,” says designer, Elora Hardy.

While the term “treehouse” may conjure images of ramshackle structures, IBUKU’s tree dwellings are a beautiful tribute to local craftsmanship and the environment. The materials used in the construction of the treehouses are locally sourced and sustainable, including bamboo and reclaimed hardwoods. The treehouses are also powered by solar energy and feature an environmentally safe wastewater treatment system.

In addition to the incredible treehouses, Nayara Bocas del Toro offers 16 custom overwater villas, a 70-foot freshwater pool, the 100-year-old Elephant House restaurant, and the world’s first elevated white sand beach built on stilts over the sea. The resort is designed with the guest experience in mind, and each architectural feature is intended to create a unique and unforgettable experience for visitors.

Guests can enjoy a variety of activities during their stay, including non-motorized water sports and access to a gym and spa. The resort is 100% off-grid, with purified rainwater providing for all freshwater needs and solar panels generating electricity. Wi-Fi is available in rooms and common areas, allowing guests to stay connected even in this secluded paradise.

Nayara Resorts, the parent company of Nayara Bocas del Toro, has been at the forefront of ecotourism and conservation-driven luxury travel in Central America since the debut of its flagship property in Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano National Park more than a decade ago. Since then, the company has expanded to include three beloved Costa Rican properties, each with its own unique personality, all spread over a lush mountainside and looking out to the Arenal Volcano. In 2020, Nayara Resorts expanded into Chile by adding Nayara Alto Atacama to its portfolio.

With the addition of the treehouses at Nayara Bocas del Toro, guests can now experience luxury travel in a new and exciting way. The combination of sustainable materials, local craftsmanship, and breathtaking views creates a unique and unforgettable experience that is sure to delight visitors.
