Erik ten Hag is seeking to rebuild United’s midfield with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic set to leave Old Trafford this summer, leaving the Dutchman with the options of Scott McTominay, Fred, James Garner along with 19-year-old Hannibal Mejbri.
Ten Hag is keen to bring in two midfielders, hoping to convince Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong to swap the Camp Nou for Old Trafford.
While the former Ajax star would bring some much-needed guile in the middle of the park, ten Hag is also looking to add some steel.
N’Golo Kante is being considered with Chelsea set to make the France international available for a reduced price this summer, according to The Athletic.
The 32-year-old started just 21 league games this season however with regular fitness becoming an increasingly concerning issue.
Should United consider alternative options, the report names Ajax’s Alvarez as player ‘highly-rated’ by ten Hag.
The 24-year-old Mexico international was regularly deployed as a defensive midfielder last season but can also operate at centre-back.
United have also been strongly linked with Monaco sensation Aurelien Tchouameni. The 22-year-old is expected to leave the Ligue 1 side this summer with Liverpool and Real Madrid battling it out for his signature.
Tchouameni however is not being ‘actively pursued’ by United with the Frenchman reportedly set to pick Real Madrid as his next destination.
