‘Essential’ painting step for the ‘most professional’ looking wall

Painting a wall doesn’t necessarily sound like such a difficult task to accomplish but it’s definitely not a simple one either. That is why property expert Simon Boden from online estate agent House Sales Direct has spoken exclusively to Express.co.uk to share six useful tips households need to know when painting a wall for more professional results.

Tip 1: Prepare the surface

Painting over a textured wall will “certainly not” provide great results, according to Simon, which is why it’s important to prepare the surface well before starting.

For those who have paintings unhung up on their wall, households should start by taking them off as well as any nails.

Simon said: “It’s vital that you fill in any holes with a drywall compound mixture as it’s less likely to be visible through the paint. Then, in order to leave a smooth surface, you must sand the walls perfectly.

“This step is essential for the most professional and smoothest finish of the wall. Make sure you clean any dust or dirt left after the sanding!”

Simon said: “Grab your sander and smooth out any unfortunate drips or rough spots. That will help you get the most perfect final finish.”

Tip 4: Remove the tape properly

When it comes to removing the tape the “biggest concern” for most is that you could accidentally peel off some of the paint, therefore ruining the look of the wall.

Simon explained: “If the wall hasn’t fully dried out, it’s a big risk to do so. That is why we suggest using a box cutter for the task. Simply run the cutter along the edge where the tape meets the wall to ensure a clean peel off.”

A pro tip is to either pull the tape immediately while the paint is still wet or wait until the next day when it’s going to be completely dry. If the paint is only partially dry you risk peeling off some of the fresh paint.

Tip 6: Use “W” Method

When painting a wall, Simon advised that households follow the W method for ample coverage and to help avoid those pesky streaks.

The expert said: “This method is very commonly used and serves everyone nicely. Many pro painters swear by this method as well so it’s worth giving it a try.

“If you haven’t heard of you, it is simply drawing a massive W across the length and height of your wall and then filling in the smaller sections.”

It’s important to remember to reload the roller before starting the next section of the W.
