Ex-Owls and Forest star Bart-Williams passes away at the age of 49

Chris Bart-Williams has sadly passed away at the age of just 49.

The former midfielder became something of a Premier League cult hero due to his eight years in the top flight during the 1990s.

After making his senior breakthrough with Leyton Orient, Bart-Williams joined Sheffield Wednesday for a then club-record fee of £275k in 1991.

He made 156 appearances for the Owls, scoring 24 goals before joining Nottingham Forest for £2.5million in 1995.

Bart-Williams spent six and a half years at the City Ground, making 245 appearances and scoring 35 times, before spending time with Charlton, Ipswich, , APOEL and Maltese side Marsaxlokk.

More recently, he has worked as a coach and mentor to young football players in America.

A number of the midfielder’s former teammates have paid tribute, with former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, Mark Crossley tweeting: “Devastating and I’m so upset to hear the news of Trevor Francis passing and my former team mate Chris Bart Williams, both so young, it is so sad, RIP Trevor and Chris.”

Kevin Campbell, another teammate at Forest, also said: “R.I.P. Chris, love you Bartman!

“My lil brother we shared such great moments and I truly am devastated at the extremely sad news!”.
