While there are so many Southern California music festivals still on the calendar for 2023, two new festivals are coming to Orange County in September.
Brew Ha Ha Productions announced the launch of its latest festival brand, Left Coast Luau. The single-day event will feature beer tastings from local and regional craft breweries for those 21-and-older and sets from Reverend Horton Heat, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Ozomatli, Jonny Two Bags, Teenage Goo Goo Muck and more. It’s taking place at Oak Canyon Park in Silverado on Saturday, Sept. 9. Here’s how to get tickets to the festival.
For those who love to bang their heads, the two-day Metal Injection Festival is taking over The Observatory in Santa Ana and House of Blues in Anaheim on Sept. 16-17. The shows will include performances by members of Sepultura playing the band’s “Morbid Visions” and “Bestial Devastation” albums and turns from Testament, Machine Head, Fear Factory and more. Insomniac Events’ HARD Summer is celebrating its 15th anniversary by returning to where it started: Downtown Los Angeles. The two-day festival will take place across multiple stages situated at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Exposition Park and BMO Stadium (formerly Banc of California Stadium) on Aug. 5-6. Reporter Holly Alvarado talked to L.A.-based EDM artist Kaskade, who is headlining on Saturday with a b2b set also featuring John Summit.
“If you can believe it, this is actually the first time I’m playing HARD Summer, which is crazy because I feel like I’ve played at every massive event in California that exists,” Kaskade said during our interview. “I’ve always looked at HARD as the ‘cool guy,’ so I’m happy to be invited. They’ve always been super progressive in who they booked, and it’s the perfect platform for me to finally play a cool back-to-back.”

???? Emo Goes EDM
Speaking of Insomniac Events, the Southern California-based electronic music events promoter shared on Tuesday, July 25 that it had partnered with the founders of the Los Angeles-based Emo Nite events. After Emo Nite went over well at Insomniac’s EDC in Las Vegas earlier this year, founder and CEO Pasquale Rotella hit up Emo Nite’s T.J. Petracca and Morgan Freed to create a new music experience dubbed Grave Rave.
The emo-meets-electronic music event will take place in Los Angeles in December and the deal doesn’t end there. Insomniac x Emo Nite is also launching an apparel line and record label, Graveboy Records. The companies are hosting a free Grave Rave preview in L.A. on Aug. 26. Here’s how to RSVP for that event.
???? So Long, FivePoint Amphitheatre
I’ve been covering the ongoing fight to open a permanent amphitheater in Irvine since they tore down Irvine Meadows following back-to-back final shows with No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani in 2016, so I thought I’d share a little update.
On Tuesday, July 25, the Irvine City Council officially ended its partnership with concert promoters Live Nation, who previously booked Irvine Meadows and the temporary FivePoint Amphitheatre that was constructed and has been operating seasonally just outside the Great Park since 2017.
So what does it mean? Well, Live Nation will continue its shows at FivePoint Amphitheatre through the end of the year and then we’ll just wait and see.
Reporter Yusra Farzan was at the city council meeting on Tuesday and wrote that without Live Nation as a partner, City Manager Oliver Chi was now tasked with coming back to the council in 90 days with a replacement plan for the temporary amphitheater, which will include up to 10,000 seats and an in-house speaker system with non-residential noise impacts. The council also insisted that the venue wouldn’t be run by a single promoter, but a third-party operator. Read more about the city’s proposal for a new venue here.
