Firefly Star Gives An Honest but Disappointing View On Season 2 Chances

With so many franchises releasing late sequels, having reboots or going through revivals, fans of the sci-fi series Firefly continue to hold out hope for a possible second season for the show that was canceled after a single installment by Fox.

Almost 20 years after its premiere and finale, the production created by Joss Whedon has become a cult hit for fans of the genre, who are waiting for a miraculous late renewal for a second season even when a movie was made after the first one. But one of the main stars doesn’t see that happening.

While speaking to TVLine, actress Jewel Staite broke the silence on the audience’s insistence to get new episodes of the show and how much they talk to her about it, even though she thinks it’s almost impossible to get a second season:

“I get asked all the time about Season 2 of Firefly, which makes me laugh because it’s been like 20 years, but when I get asked that, I’m like, ‘There’s a better chance of L.A. Complex than there is of Firefly… Oh, I just wanted her to be a mom. [Simon would be the baby daddy.] I think Kaylee would have made a wonderful mother, and I love the idea of a baby being on the ship and raising the stakes so much. I feel like it would just show different sides to every character’s personality to have a baby around. I would love to have seen Captain Mal holding an infant and not sure what to do with it…. I feel like there’s way more than one kid there. Kaylee would just want to have as many as possible.”

In addition to Staite who played Kaywinnit “Kaylee” Frye, the series featured Nathan Fillion as Malcolm Reynolds, Gina Torres as Zoe Alleyne Washburne, Alan Tudyk as Hoban “Wash” Washburne, Morena Baccarin as Inara Serra, Adam Baldwin as Janye Cobb, Sean Maher as Dr. Simon Tam, Summer Glau as River Tam, and Ron Glass as Derrial Book.

What Was Firefly About?

20th Century Fox

Located in the 26th century, the story shows a reality where humanity has had to leave planet Earth, settling in a new planetary system in order to survive far from the destruction caused at home. All this under the governance of the Alliance, a power made up of the United States and China, who joined forces as the only two surviving world powers.

Within this context, the series follows the adventures of the crew of a Firefly-type ship called Serenity, led by the rebel Malcolm Reynolds, who engaged in a civil war driven by the outlying worlds to prevent the rise of the Alliance. Outcast and determined to stay away from the power of the current government, Malcolm acquired the ship to make his home.

So, beyond any sci-fi element, Firefly is about a family in the making, people who don’t belong to the reigning system and find their place among others like them.

Despite not being renewed for a second season, in 2005 Whedon released Serenity, a film that continued the events after the outcome of the series. Thanks to the movie, the director managed to create a small franchise that included graphic novels, books and more.
