First, we had an instrument cluster, which gave us relevant driving information. In 1988, Oldsmobile upped the ante with the world’s first head-up display. Now, Ford has hit the boost button, recently previewing a new piece of tech where road-sign info or other data can be projected onto the road ahead of the driver via the headlamps.
It’s not totally new, as across the pond, Mercedes-Benz has done the same via its S-Class Digital Light option.
But Ford could be the first non-luxury maker to adapt the feature.
In this Ford YouTube video, you can see how the “high-resolution headlight” technology works; allegedly, it’ll project directions, speed limits, and even weather information onto the road, clearly in the driver’s line of sight. The video shows the info projected in white — so what happens if it’s snowing? Is this white the right shade to be read in contrast to snow?

Besides putting needed info right where the driver’s looking, there could be other benefits to the tech — let’s say, if road markings are faded and a nearby crosswalk couldn’t be seen. This technology could project a crosswalk, and decrease the risks of a pedestrian collision. Additionally, it could also light or project a route that a driver would use to safely pass cyclists.
The headlights are connected to the navigation system, and so could inform the driver of various inclement road conditions; and if the driver uses the navigation to input a destination, turn-by-turn directions could also be projected on the road.
No word from Ford on when or on what vehicles this feature may see its debut, but if it’s gone through the effort of putting together a YouTube video and pictures, it can’t be that far off.
