Freak golf incident rules Australia star out of England Cricket World Cup clash

Australia cricket star Glenn Maxwell will play no part in his country’s Cricket World Cup clash against England on Saturday after suffering a freak golf incident on Monday. The Australian squad played a round of golf on Monday as part of their downtime.

Maxwell was said to have been riding on the back of a golf cart before slipping and falling off. The Australian all-round suffered a head injury and was placed into the concussion protocol, meaning he won’t be available to play against England on Saturday.

His absence will be a blow to Australia head coach Andrew McDonald given Maxwell’s form at the World Cup. No decision has been made by McDonald on who will take Maxwell’s place in Australia’s side.

“In transporting him back from the clubhouse to the team bus, Glenn Maxwell came off the back of a car and has suffered a small concussion, so he will go into concussion protocols for the next period of time and will unfortunately miss the England game,” McDonald said.

“There’ll be no replacement (in the squad) as such, he’ll go into six to eight days concussion protocol. So they said that takes into account the England game, he’ll be unavailable for that game.

“And then clearly within the squad we’ve got some players who become available Marcus Stoinis, Cameron Green’s there available as well, but we haven’t made that decision as yet. The guys were ferried off on carts. Glenn and a few other players jumped on the back of carts and unfortunately he lost his grip on the way back to the team bus and sustained that injury. Over the last couple of days he’s been assessed.

“We feel as though it’ll be a relatively straightforward return to play protocol with where he’s at at the moment.”

Maxwell’s absence does give England more hope of springing an upset on Saturday in what has been a disastrous defence of their title.

They need to win all remaining three matches to stand any chance of making it through to the semi-finals while drastically improving their run-rate.

Meanwhile, Australia overcame a disappointing start to the tournament to find a run of form which now has them as one of the favourites to progress to the final four.
