Tyson Fury claims that he will have to undergo surgery on an elbow issue after battling through a scrappy WBC world heavyweight title bout with Derek Chisora. The Gypsy King is expected to fight Oleksandr Usyk next to determine who is the undisputed top dog in the heavyweight division, but Fury’s return to the gym could be delayed by up to two months.
“I’ve got to maybe have surgery on my right elbow,” Fury said in the ring. “I had the left one done, so I’ve got to have it done. It will take about six-to-eight weeks to heal. We’ll see when we can be ready for this fight.”
Despite some criticising Saturday’s match-up on the basis that Fury has come out on top in his two previous meetings with Chisora, the 6ft 9in giant came out at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with an elaborate ring walk that revved up the crowd.
The first round was about as good as it got for Chisora, who struggled to mount any meaningful charge towards Fury from the second onwards. The defending champion repeatedly landed thudding shots against his 38-year-old opponent, who was put out of his misery in the 10th round when the referee stepped in to cement an anti-climactic finish.
The result preserved Fury’s unbeaten record and set up a mouthwatering clash with fellow undefeated champion Usyk, who holds the IBF, IBO, WBO and WBA belts after his pair of wins over Anthony Joshua.

As for Chisora, it means he has lost 13 of his 46 fights with many supporters calling on him to retire. After the fight was stopped, Fury gave fans a reality check regarding the Usyk fight as he claims to have issues with his hands and an elbow problem that is likely to require surgery, and a recovery time of six-to-eight weeks.
Usyk had pledged to take a break until the New Year regardless after two taxing fights against AJ in the space of 11 months. However, it means that Fury will face a delay before getting back into the gym and working back up to the fighting fitness that was on display against Chisora.
Usyk was sat ringside for Fury’s dominant victory in north London and the pair came face-to-face as fans begin to look forward to a potential scrap in 2023. In typically entertaining fashion, the Gypsy King shouted: “A 15-stone little midget beat a bodybuilder… well I ain’t a body builder, sucker, I’m going to write you off.
“I’ve already done one Ukrainian in [Wladimir] Klitschko, didn’t I, and I’ll do you as well, gappy teeth. You ugly little man. You ugly little man! Let’s get it on!” Fellow British heavyweight Joe Joyce was also sat at ringside and some believe that to be an intriguing match-up if Usyk can’t be called back into action straight away.
“I think I could have done better,” Joyce told BT Sport. “On paper, it’s what you expected. I’ll have both of them – I’ll have Fury and Usyk. Which one first? Maybe Usyk because he’s here now.”
Earlier on in the night, up-and-coming heavyweight Daniel Dubois survived an almighty scare after going down three times in the first round against heavy underdog Kevin Lerana. Dubois asked his corner ‘what happened’ before the second round but came back to earn a stoppage in the third.
