Gavaskar unhappy with Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, worried about Ashwin’s statement of ‘colleagues not friends’

Rohit-led Team India failed to reach the T20 World Cup final last year and lost the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia last month at the Oval in London.

Sunil Gavaskar

In an interview with Indian Express, Gavaskar, one of the staunch supporters of Rohit, expressed his unhappiness with how the captain has failed to step up since taking over from Virat Kohli in February 2022.

“I expected more from him (Rohit). In India it is different, but when you do well overseas that is really the test. That is where he has been a little disappointing,” Gavaskar told Indian Express.

“Even in the T20 format, with all the experience of the IPL, hundreds of matches as captain, with a mix of best IPL players not being able to get to the finals has been disappointing.”

Gavaskar was also baffled with the current team environment after Ravichandran Ashwin had said in a recent interview with Indian Express that ‘earlier, team mates used to be friends, now we are just colleagues’.

“It’s a sad thing because you should be able to get together after play ends and maybe not talk about the game but talk about music, maybe talk about the films you like, maybe talk about your interest in space,” Gavaskar added.

“But if that is not what is happening, that is disappointing. Having said that, the new thing that started 20 years back or longer is that every player gets a single room. That too can be a factor …”

Rohit and Co are currently in the Caribbean preparing for the first of the two Tests, scheduled to take place at the Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica from Wednesday (July 12).
