Genesis is recalling over 65,000 vehicles in the U.S. and another 6,900 in Canada, according to Transport Canada, due to potentially exploding seat-belt pretensioners. In the event of an accident, the front seat belts can explode and scatter shrapnel into and around the cabin, potentially harming passengers.

Currently, the affected vehicles are equipped with pyrotechnic-type seat-belt pretensioners that can “deploy abnormally in certain crashes due to [an] over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe,” said Hyundai, parent company of Genesis. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail. They’ll be asked to take their vehicle to the dealer, where the belt will be secured to prevent the abnormal deployment of the part.
You can check online at Transport Canada, using your VIN, to see if your vehicle has been recalled.
