Get ‘smoother’ skin with exfoliating method loved by mature beauty expert

Wrinkles and fine lines are the most obvious signs of ageing on the skin, both of which are hard to conceal with makeup.

Changing the texture of a complexion is only possible with skin care treatments, though they don’t have to cost a fortune to make a difference.

In fact, according to mature beauty expert Gigi (@gigi__333), it’s possible to get instant results simply by exfoliating the skin.

Sharing her anti-ageing advice on her TikTok account, the 58-year-old revealed five things women can do for a “smoother” complexion.

She said: “Number one. Shave your face… just do it!”

More commonly known as dermaplaning, shaving the sensitive skin on the face should only be done with specially designed razors that aren’t too harsh.

These are often flat, stick-like razors with a blade on just one side – referred to as dermaplaning tools. It is also important to speak to an expert before going ahead.

According to an expert at Botanica Day Spa, the process has “quite a few benefits” which largely come from the exfoliation rather than the removal of hair.

The spa professional explained that the anti-ageing results of face shaving are collagen stimulation and deeper product penetration. This means that when anti-ageing formulas like retinol are applied to the skin, the results may be better due to improved skin absorption.

Professionals at the Institute of Aesthetic Surgery also claimed that shaving can target existing and future wrinkles too.

They said: “Dermaplaning is one of those therapies that help turn back the hands of time. Its deep exfoliation helps stimulate the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin.

“Collagen, that all-important ingredient we hear so much about, serves as a building block for protein. It’s found throughout the body and, in the case of an injury, floods the area to speed healing and create fresh skin.”

They went on to explain that after the scalpel feathers the skin, the body goes to work increasing collagen levels to create new, firmer tissues with fewer lines and wrinkles.

This means that when anti-ageing formulas like retinol are applied to the skin, the results may be better due to improved skin absorption.

Many people who had tried the beauty hack agreed with Gigi’s recommendation. One TikTok user wrote: “I think your advice is amazing and so is your skin!! HOLY! You look 35!” Another added: “I shave my face weekly and my skin is silky! Makeup also sits perfectly on my skin.”

The beauty expert also suggested swapping salicylic acid for lactic or glycolic acid products instead and trying a salt hack for smoother skin.

She said: “Drink water throughout the day but when you do, drink about half a cup to one cup, and place a flake of Himalayan salt under your tongue. Let it sit for 30 seconds and then drink water. Do this throughout the day and you’ll notice a huge difference in your skin.”

For those who plan on trying dermaplaning, it should be noted that there are some possible side effects. These may include skin irritation on acne-prone and sensitive complexions, dryness, and minor cuts.
