Glazers make ‘£170m transfer vow’ to Ten Hag as Man Utd takeover saga drags on

The Glazers are reportedly prepared to hand Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag a £170million transfer warchest this summer, despite the club remaining up for sale. Proposals from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani are still being weighed up by United’s current owners as the transfer window gathers pace.

United fans feared that the Glazers would not be keen to splash the cash immediately before handing the club over to new owners. But investment will be crucial to maintain the club’s lofty valuation and avoid the Red Devils slipping further behind their Premier League rivals.

According to The Mirror, Ten Hag will be given the full £170m he needs to revamp his playing squad over the course of the summer. Mason Mount is already bedding in after completing a £60m move from Chelsea, but negotiations to sign a goalkeeper and a striker are also ramping up.

David de Gea has fled Old Trafford after the expiration of his contract, leaving a vacancy to be filled between the sticks.

Inter Milan stopper Andre Onana is at the top of Ten Hag’s wish list, although the Italian giants are reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £50m. The Red Devils are also in need of fresh firepower up top.

And while Tottenham captain Harry Kane began the summer as United fans’ dream signing, Spurs’ reluctance to do business with a direct rival has made the move nigh on impossible.

While improving the spine of United’s starting XI with a new goalkeeper and a promising striker will require a significant financial outlay, the Glazers informing Ten Hag that the money is there will come as a huge boost to his summer plans.

The Red Devils continue their pre-season campaign against Lyon on Wednesday, with just under a month before Wolves visit Old Trafford on the opening day of next campaign.
