Gluten-Free Chocolate Avocado Donut Recipe | Well+Good

Okay, hear us out: Avocado-flavored desserts might just be the next big thing. Between the avocado bread that’s been taking the internet by storm and this two-ingredient Vietnamese-inspired avocado shaved ice that tastes like creamy-crunchy heaven, we are reminded time and again of the versatility of this fruit.

According to the USDA, demand for avocados has steadily increased over the last two decades—with people consuming almost eight pounds of the fruit per year. Obviously, this comes as little surprise. Can we all agree that it’s time that we let avocado take over every single course of a meal? Imagine: You start with a guacamole and chips appetizer, progress onto a creamy avocado pasta main course, and, to finish the meal, a luscious and rich avocado donut recipe for dessert. Indeed, donuts are just one more show that avocados can and will gladly steal.

How to make gluten-free chocolate avocado donuts

In a recent video by @lovelydelites, chef and recipe developer Hannah Kling shares her super easy avocado donut recipe that, as she says, proves that the “limit does not exist” when it comes to avo-possibilities. TBH, we couldn’t agree more.

The gluten-free recipe is made with a base of almond and tapioca flour and sweetened with coconut sugar. Kling also adds cacao to the mix (swoon) and, of course, one whole super ripe avocado to make the creamiest batter possible. She also uses a blender for easy clean-up and smoother consistency (and unlike traditional donuts, these are baked, so there is no need to get the fryer going).

To get the iconic donut shape, Kling uses a donut mold like this one sold on Amazon plus a piping bag packed with the batter to fill each mold with the perfect amount of dough. Once they’re baked to perfection, she transfers them to a cooling rack to ensure they come to room temperature before she tops them with a homemade batch of frosting.

As if she hadn’t fulfilled all of our avocado dreams already, Kling then tops the spongy and decadent avocado chocolate donuts with a DIY avocado “buttercream” that adds a pop of lime green color and *so* much creaminess.

ICYMI, avocados are really good for you

You might be wondering: Are avocados really worth the hype or is this a case of too-good-to-be-true? Fortunately, these vibrant green fruits have received many a registered dietitian’s seal of approval, as they’re loaded with tons of health benefits. For starters, avocados are filled with healthy monounsaturated fats that not only give them their creamy texture but also can help improve cholesterol levels, registered dietitian Tracy Lockwood Beckerman, RD, previously told Well+Good.

Additionally, avocados have nearly half of your daily recommended fiber intake, plus they’re packed with antioxidants (including lutein, zeaxanthin, and carotenoids) and magnesium to help support better sleep. What a dreamy combination…literally.
