Best places in Greece for a family holiday including both the mainland and Greek Islands such as Corfu, Crete, Mykonos, Rhodes, Athens and more for 2022

Greece holidays are on the cards this summer as the country is open to all UK travellers, although it does have Covid travel rules in place that differ depending on your vaccination status.

Under the current rules, fully vaccinated Brits can visit without needing Covid tests, while those who are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated will need either a PCR test taken within 72 hours before travel, or an antigen test within 48 hours. Meanwhile, the country recently axed passenger locator forms, meaning that little bit less Covid admin.

Of course with those gorgeous Greek Islands, beautiful historic sights and epic beaches, it’s no surprise that Greece continues to be a firm favourite with UK holidaymakers – but where exactly are the best places for family holidays?

Rhodes

Rhodes is one of our picks of the best Greek Islands, especially for families.

There are plenty of brilliant resorts that cater to families, complete with big buffets, huge pools and even a cheeky water park or two. Tripadvisor has a handy guide to Rhodes’ best family hotels for 2022 to get you started.

For those who like to do some exploring, there’s plenty around the island including historical sites such as the Acropolis, to the island’s best beaches with sandy shores and pebbled coves making up the coast.

Corfu

Corfu has more of a laidback vibe compared to some of the other islands, although there is still a brilliant nightlife to be found.

The island has heaps of family-friendly beaches with nearby cafes, sun lounger hire and other facilities, and it’s also got some great spots for watersports for the more adventurous of families.

Crete

The biggest of the Greek Islands, Crete can cater to a wide array of family holidays whether you’re after easy, all-inclusive breaks, or you’re after adventures from family hikes to snorkeling.

The island is also filled with beautiful historic sites, such as the Knossos ruins, amazing foodie spots and beautiful scenery such as the Mount Ida.

Then of course there are those incredible Crete beaches with sandy shores, swim-friendly waters and facilities like showers and toilets, making them ideal for family days out.

Mykonos

Mykonos may have a reputation for being a party island – and it definitely delivers if that’s what you’re after – but the island is also home to some quieter beaches, family-friendly restaurants and offers plenty of brilliant resorts that cater to families with children.

There are some great luxury hotels to be found across the island but it is possible to find slightly more budget-friendly accommodation if you consider self-catering and B&B options.

Thessaloniki

If you’re after a holiday that’s packed with interesting places to visit, Thessaloniki won’t disappoint. Ancient ruins, fascinating museums, great restaurants are all on the cards, not to mention it can be a great base if you want to go on day trips to other parts of Greece.

It’s much more of a city break than a beach holiday, but there are a handful of picturesque sandy beaches if you did want to spend a day soaking up the sunshine.

Halkidiki

Nestled just south of Thessaloniki sits this picturesque peninsula where you’ll find heaps of sandy beaches, bustling promenades and seaside resorts packed with shops, restaurants and hotels.

The beaches also have a good range of facilities including showers, cafes, toilets, snack bars and sunlounger hire, so they can be an ideal spot for families looking for a stress-free beach day out.

Athens

Looking for a fascinating city break that will appeal to teens?

Athens offers a glimpse into ancient Greece itself, with some incredible ruins to visit from the Acropolis to the Temple of Zeus. Meanwhile, the modern side of the city comes with a brilliant nightlife, great family-friendly restaurants, and plenty of hotels to suit a wide array of budgets.

Peloponnese

The Peloponnese peninsula on mainland Greece has everything you could want for a holiday; archaeological sites, historic castles, beautiful beaches and heaps of those picture-perfect backdrops that you’ve likely seen all over your social media feeds.

The region isn’t typically seen as a classic family holiday destination, but it has plenty of restaurants, attractions and hotels that cater to families, and it can be ideal for those looking to avoid some of the peak season crowds (although come summer it’s still pretty busy).
