Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele has reportedly made a decision with regards to his future at the club, as his contract nears an end.

Jele signed a one-year extension to his contract at Pirates at the end of the previous season, but that deal is now set to expire at the end of June.
Jele is Pirates’ longest serving player
Jele has become synonymous with his beloved Pirates over the years, and having spent his entire career, which spans all of 16 years in 2021. Having joined the club in 2006, the lanky star quickly went up the ranks and made a name for himself at the club as a right back. He would be stationed in that position for the bulk of the first half of his career, before his height and tough tackling attributes made it easier for him to be redeployed in the centre of defence where he has grown from strength to strength for the Buccaneers.

Although still largely a stalwart of the Pirates side, Jele’s career at the club has become hampered by injuries, and that pattern has not seemed to abate this season either. That concerning pattern coupled with his age will have the Sea Robbers’ management scratching their heads as to whether or not it is worth offering the veteran a new deal, or is investing in a more youthful option, the answer?

Well, while Pirates still have a big decision to make with regards to Jele’s situation, it is thought that the player himself has not thought twice about it. According to sources speaking to The Citizen, the 35-year-old wants to stay on at the club.
Source reveals he is ‘happy’ to stay
“He still feels very strong and can go on to play for some years even though he is 35 years old now. The sad part about this whole situation is that it is not entirely up to him, there are many people involved and the future of the club has to be considered as well. He has played a number of games and he did quite well even though he got injured at some point. But the arrival of Ndah (Olisa) has made things difficult for Jele because the club has a young and quality centre-back they can rely on just as it was with Jele when he was younger. Anyway, he is the longest serving player in the current squad and maybe another extension might just be his reward from the club,” said the source.
