The producer behind Rihanna’s show-stopping Super Bowl Halftime performance has revealed how she kept the news of her pregnancy under wraps until she emerged for the show.
On Sunday evening, the Diamonds singer made her highly-awaited return to the world stage to perform in the middle of the American football match between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 34-year-old burst onto the stage in a striking bright red ensemble, before revealing her baby bump, much to the surprise of fans around the world following the recent arrival of her baby boy in May 2022.
In a new interview, Jesse Collins, the producer of the Halftime Show, revealed the measures the team had to take to make sure that the details of the production were kept under wraps, including Rihanna’s pregnancy.
‘We had to rehearse way out in the sticks of [Los Angeles] and Santa Clarita to keep it all secretive,’ he told Entertainment Tonight.
‘It was a lot of work. And then, how do you keep the secret that she’s pregnant? I mean that’s hard too… Honestly, as soon as it [was] done I’m like, “Woo, let’s get her back down.” That’s all I want to do is get her back on the ground… It was a lot of prep, a lot of nerves and [I’m] just really happy to be a part of it.’
One of the most talked-about aspects of Rihanna’s performance has been the setlist, as while many fans were left in awe by the show, some felt disappointed by the omission of some of her greatest hits, including Disturbia, Don’t Stop the Music and Pon De Replay.
According to Jesse, the selection of songs changed several times until Rihanna settled on the setlist that she felt was ‘absolutely perfect’, which ended up being ‘version 39’.
Following the Super Bowl, Rihanna teased the imminent release of new music, telling Good Morning America that she was ‘excited’ by the prospect.
‘They [the fans] are waiting. I am excited to actually put new music out, but I don’t have any updates for you on that yet,’ she said, having last put out a studio album in 2016.
