Ian Wright is confident Mauricio Pochettino will ‘sort out’ Chelsea and says the former Tottenham manager only needs two signings in his first transfer window in charge.

Ex-Spurs boss Pochettino has signed a three-year contract to take over at Stamford Bridge and become the club’s sixth permanent manager in five years.

Pochettino, who has also managed Southampton and Paris Saint-Germain, is joining a Chelsea side who finished just 12th this season – closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League places.

Chelsea’s struggles come despite Todd Boehly spending almost £600m on new signings since purchasing the club last year.

Given the quality and size of Chelsea’s squad, Wright says Pochettino can afford to have a subdued summer transfer window but insists the Blues need a new goalkeeper and striker.

Chelsea shot-stoppers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy have both flattered to deceive in west London and Pochettino is said to be keen to sign a new No. 1 as he looks to resurrect the Blues.

Pochettino is also expected to splash out on a new striker this summer, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set to leave Stamford Bridge and Romelu Lukaku pushing for a permanent transfer from Chelsea.

‘I don’t think Pochettino needs to do much this summer because of the calibre of coach he is and how good he is with young players and how he can organise a team,’ Wright told BBC’s Match of the Day after Chelsea drew 1-1 with Newcastle United on the final day of the season.

‘If you look at what Chelsea have got, probably sign a goalkeeper this summer, definitely a number nine – but when you look at what they’ve got in the squad, they’ve got enough pieces.

‘He needs to cut the squad down a bit and bring in some quality. They’ve already got quality but bring in a bit more. Chelsea fans should be excited about Pochettino because he will sort this out.’

Chelsea started the season under Champions League-winning manager Thomas Tuchel but the German was sacked in September after a poor start to the campaign.

The Blues briefly impressed under Tuchel’s replacement Graham Potter before the club’s form got even worse and the ex-Brighton boss was sacked after less than seven months in the job.

Chelsea hoped bringing Stamford Bridge legend Frank Lampard back as caretaker manager would help but they won just once in 12 games under the former Everton boss.

Following Chelsea’s final-day draw with Newcastle, Lampard said: ‘It was nice [to say goodbye to the fans], I really appreciate them. Chelsea fans understand the tough position we were in when I came here.

‘Although we haven’t got the results we want this season, it is what it is. I’m not too nostalgic, I’ve got a great bond with the club and I’ll be back many times.’
