Post the collapse, former Australia captain Ian Chappell took a dig, saying that he wasn’t “convinced” a few batters in the India line-up are good players of spin. He pointed directed fingers at Shreyas Iyer, who was out for a duck in the first innings, tagged him a “panicker”.
“Cheteshwar Pujara is very jumpy. I think right through the series he has been very jumpy. I keep hearing that Shreyas Iyer is a very good player of spin bowling, but I haven’t seen it yet, and I’m not convinced that he is. To me, he is a bit of a panicker,” Chappell said on ESPNCricinfo.
“There are some players in the Indian side that haven’t convinced me that they’re good players of spin bowling. I thought that the Australians spooked India early on. A couple of things happened with the pitch. The Australian spinners bowled very accurately. But what we saw was Australian-type batting from the Indians,” he added.
Shreyas Iyer ‘hits’ back in style
The stylish right-hand batter did not take long to ‘hit’ back at Chappell as his bat made all the good noise on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test match on Thursday.

Coming to bat at 78/4, with India still trailing by 10 runs, got in the groove just after facing four deliveries. On the fourth ball of the 34th over from Matthew Kuhnemann, dispatched a short ball over mid-wicket for a massive six. The next over from Nathan Lyon saw the Mumbai batter hit two consecutive boundaries. In the 36th over from Kuhnemann, he set the tone further for his side, whipping a boundary through mid-wicket. Three balls later, he pulled a delivery in the same region.

The 28-year-old looked all set to take the game fast away from the visitors before Usman Khawaja grabbed a stunner to force Iyer’s long way back to the pavilion. A full length ball from Mitchell Starc was flicked by Iyer and was well outside the reach of Khawaja, however, he dived to his left, went reverse cups and ensured the ball did not touch the ground. Umpire’s decided to go upstairs but the replays found no problem with the catch whatsoever.

However, Iyer with his action-packed 26 off 27 by then had proved his game against spin on a rank turner. By the fall of 27 wickets, only five batters had scored over 25 runs. Not a single batter except for Iyer scored them with a strike rate in excess of 95.
