Earlier, the idea was to host India vs Afghanistan series between June 20 and 30 before India leaves for the Caribbean tour. However, with Asia Cup coming up in September, BCCI officials are worried that Indian players will be exhausted with World Cup later in October-November.
Indian players are already yearning for a break after two months of IPL, which is followed by the WTC final in June and the comes the full-fledged tour of West Indies from July 12 to August 13. Seven of the Team India members and coaching staff is already in London and are preparing for the big final.
As per a PTI report, BCCI is also considering sending a second-string squad for the series is also being considered. Likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are certain to be rested.
Cricbuzz, however, further reported that one possible reason behind not confirming the dates for the series is due to end of BCCI’s broadcast deal with Disney Star. The new tender for broadcast is yet to come out. An interim arrangement is a possibility but will that lead to agreeing on the right amount is still a question for the board.
The report also added that Afghanistan Cricket Board’s chief Mirwais Ashraf is currently in India to attend the IPL final on May 28. A meeting between Asian Cricket Council (ACC) officials is also scheduled on the day to finalise the venue for the Asia Cup.
