Stephen Curry is one of the faces of the NBA. Curry is incredibly popular, one of the true household names in sports due to his ability on the court and family-friendly image off it.
The Warriors guard and four-time NBA champion was recently named a finalist for the NBA’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award. The award is presented to players who make strides in their communities, similar to the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
Curry has certainly worked to help advance social justice on both a national and local level, but some fans are critical of him after recent news of his opposition to affordable housing near his Bay Area home.
Kareem should be livid his name is being used like this.
Stephen Curry is under investigation for fraudulently getting people to invest in crypto. He refused to allow affordable housing near him. He’s not at all representative of social justice.
What a joke. https://t.co/9HCNFJiOpO

San Francisco: We’re making great work on this affordable housing project. It will help out so many low-income families and combat our ongoing homeless crisis!

Curry and his wife Ayesha sent a letter to the city of Atherton, California citing “major concerns in terms of both privacy and safety with three-story townhomes looming directly behind us.”
The city planned to build a 16-unit townhome development on 1.5 acres of land near the family’s $30 million home.
“We hesitate to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) rhetoric,” the Currys said in the letter. “but we wanted to send a note before today’s meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home.”
While most would likely argue that Curry’s efforts in other areas are commendable and deserve to be recognized, it seems that the NBA world has taken issue with his opposition to affordable housing.
