Internet on the high seas, what technology is behind it? – Spain’s News

The technology behind the new boats with Wi-Fi

Tourists enjoy a vacation at sea on a cruise ship with the most technology available and with Wi-Fi inside the cabin, but, how can it be possible, if we are thousands of miles from the coast.

The connection on the high seas is increasingly necessary and also opens the door to the study of the seabed to optimize ship routes, avoid collisions with whales and sperm whales and understand the migratory flows of fauna.

At this point, it is worth distinguishing between those for civil use and military use, since the technology is different. The Ministry of Defense entrusted a project to deploy the Spanish Satellite Communications System (SECOMSAT), which included the design of the network and the supply of remote terminals currently used by the three armies. Thus, for example, it has installed its satellite communications systems on many ships, including a simultaneous dual communication system in X and Ka band used by the flagship of the Spanish Navy, the Juan Carlos I. It has also supplied this type of system to different navies around the world, including, without going any further, the German one, which has terminals installed in its K130 corvette program.

In order to take care of the oceans, we must take care of technology and create it for good purposes. One of the key elements is precisely this connectivity”, among other things, to promote the generational change. “Young people do not want to join the sea if at night they cannot talk to their family, send a WhatsApp or be informed.”

Cruises use the connectivity offered by different satellite connection companies and, from there, offer the connectivity that each vessel requires in terms of bandwidth or coverage. With any phone you can connect to this WiFi network and enjoy traditional applications as on land, thanks to these systems we can be connected on the high seas as if we were at home. A luxury that a decade ago was unthinkable that we could use instant messaging or gaming applications to stay connected with friends or family.
