Bill Self didn’t coach in the Big 12 Tournament after experiencing a health issue. Will he return for Kansas in March Madness against Howard?

It was a scary moment for the Kansas Jayhawks during the Big 12 Tournament when head coach Bill Self was taken to the hospital ahead of the team’s opener. It was revealed — without many official details — that Self did not suffer a heart attack but did undergo a routine procedure. He missed the entirety of the conference tournament as he recovered.

The word, though, was that Coach Self would return to the sidelines for Kansas during March Madness. The Jayhawks earned a No. 1 seed (the third-overall seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament) and are set to face the Howard Bison on Thursday in the First Round.

So the question everyone is asking is if Bill Self will be coaching Kansas in that March Madness opener against Howard.

Kansas released a statement on Thursday morning that Self will miss Thursday’s game against Howard as he continues to recover (h/t CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander). Assistant Norm Roberts will serve as the head coach for the game against the Bison.

This is a bit shocking considering the expectation was that Self would return for March Madness. However, the last thing anyone wants is to see the head coach return before it’s medically wise to do so.

Kansas should have little problem getting past Howard with Roberts manning the ship, though, and we’ll continue to monitor the health of Bill Self moving forward in the tournament.
