Derry Girls is a Channel 4 hit and the comedy-drama will go down in history as a Northern Irish classic. A surprise announcement revealed a special bonus instalment will air tomorrow, May 18, to conclude this season. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about the show’s future beyond season three.

Is there a season 4 of Derry Girls?

The upcoming episode of season three sees the group of friends get their hands on tickets to the gig of the century and the chance to meet their idol, Fatboy Slim.

But when Da Gerry arrives unannounced, it is evident life will never be the same again for the gang.

Lisa McGee’s 90s-set sitcom has continued to provide the perfect sense of escapism on Tuesday evenings.

Yet fans will be sad to hear after the special episode has aired tomorrow, there will be no more instalments to come.

Season three marks the show’s final season, with no plans for season four at all.

Tomorrow’s special extended episode, which will air for an hour from 9pm, is set in Derry a year on.

The friends are preparing for their final year of school as well as Erin (played by Saoirse-Monica Jackson) and Orla’s (Louisa Harland) joint 18th birthday.

Their big day may be overshadowed by the referendum on the Good Friday Agreement and their futures become blurred.

McGee said she always planned to end the series after three seasons, despite the public’s appetite for more.

She said: “Derry Girls is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly…very slowly…start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time.

“Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me.

“It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved.”

As the sitcom follows students and their lives at school, the series was destined to only cover a short time frame.

The main actors started the series back in 2018, with their characters aged 16.

Now they are planning on leaving school for a new adventure, it is the perfect time to bring their story to a natural end.

Most of the actors are now in their late 20s, with Claire Devlin actress Nicola Coughlan celebrating turning 35 at the start of the year.

They would become less convincing as young adults if the series was to continue much further.

The main stars have taken to social media to discuss the bittersweet ending of the show.

Coughlan said on Instagram: “Derry Girls series three episode six is tonight, the penultimate ever, it’s a big one.

“I love these two IRL Angels more than I can say.”

She starred in a photo alongside co-stars Dylan Llewellyn and Harland.

The final episode is called The Agreement and it is set in 1998, during the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.

In an interview with Express.co.uk, author and TikTok comedy star Serena Terry shared her thoughts about the end of Derry Girls.

The real-life Derry girl said: “Devastated honestly. It’s the comedy of the century and not only has created so much laughter all around the world but it’s put the city of Derry on the map for all the right reasons.”

Derry Girls airs on Channel 4 tonight, May 17, at 9pm.
