Jenna Ortega says Wednesday will ditch a major plotline in favour of more horror

How will Wednesday resolve its love triangle in season 2? Um. It might just not. Jenna Ortega, star of the massively successful Netflix hit, just revealed that the show is leaning away from romance and toward horror when it returns. Spoooooky.

“We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more,” Jenna said in a conversation with Elle Fanning for Variety. “We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark.” Whatever. We know Wednesday’s true love is Enid Sinclair.

This isn’t a totally unexpected move; Jenna is something of a scream queen, having played a major role in the Scream franchise as well as the bloody X, Insidious: Chapter 2 and The Babysitter: Killer Queen. She’s also a producer on the second season of the show, a move that she calls a “natural progression.”

“With a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved, I didn’t want to get her wrong,” Jenna said. “So I tried to have as many conversations as possible with the writers. We’d decide what works and what doesn’t. In preparation for a second season, we wanted to make sure that we could start the conversations earlier. I’m just so curious: I want to see the outfits, new characters, scripts.”

She added that she’s especially excited to look at dailies (industry talk for reviewing the footage that got shot at the end of the day).

Jenna likens the experience of working with different departments to being a “kid in a candy store,” which Elle agrees with, saying that she loves to review footage: “It’s so fun. I would love to be an editor.”

Jenna Ortega also opened up about the difficulty of sharing her personality through social media and other publicity events, noting that she doesn’t want to be misinterpreted because of her sense of humour. “Because I naturally tend to be sarcastic or dry, it’s very easy for me to find myself in trouble,” she said. “I want people to be able to get to know the people behind the camera and realise that people should never be put on a pedestal. And the more I’ve been exposed to the world, people prey on that and take advantage of that. They see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that you don’t always expect.”

After saying this, she started to cry but continued, “I still have this really intense urge to be human and honest and authentic…. I would rather people see me cry and do whatever than be something I’m not.”

Well, we’re very excited for Wednesday to take centre-stage minus boy drama.
