In a tweet following Argentina’s World Cup win, Lingard simply posted: “Messi the [GOAT]” with five goat emojis. GOAT is an acronym for greatest of all time.
Lingard could soon be playing alongisde the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner who has recently signed for Inter Miami. The move comes following a two year spell at Paris Saint-Germain where he won two Ligue 1 titles for the French side.
Messi will also be joined by former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets in the coming weeks. The move to join such footballing icons in MLS is something that Lingard would surely want to be a part of.
The Englishman spent the majority of his playing career before the move at Manchester United where he earned 232 caps over a 11 year spell. After joining the Red Devils in 2000, he rose up through the youth levels and made his debut in 2011 under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The following seasons saw loan moves to Leicester City, Birmingham City, Brighton, Derby County and finally West Ham. His move to the London side proved fruitful under David Moyes, whom he also played under at Manchester United.
Lingard managed nine goals and five assists in 16 games for the Hammers. He then returned to Manchester United where he struggled to cement his place in the side that re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo.
